What is the HKDSE?

The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE; Chinese: 香港中學文憑) is an academic qualification administered by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA). Most candidates take four core subjects (Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, and Liberal studies), and two or three elective subjects.

In September 2009, the New Academic Structure (NAS) was implemented as a replacement for the former Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) and the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE). The NAS provides every student with the opportunity to take part in a six-year secondary course, and the HKDSE examination has now become the only public examination administered in Hong Kong for secondary school graduates.

Under the new examination framework, a number of subjects from the HKCEE and HKALE have been combined to suit the varying interests and abilities of pupils. Each HKDSE subject is composed of a compulsory part and an elective or extended part, the latter of which is a "module" of the student's choice which concentrates on a specific topic or skill. An elective module is an integral component of the standard curriculum, while an extended module is designed for students with specific aim(s) or have higher ability(s) who many want additional knowledge and skills.

There are 24 senior secondary subjects, comprised of four compulsory core subjects and 20 elective subjects. Elective subjects include Chinese or English literature, Chinese or World history, Tourism and Hospitality Studies, Design and Applied Technology, Economics, Geography, Music, Ethics and Religious Studies, Health Management and Social Care, and more.

For these Category A subjects, Standards-referenced Reporting (SRR) is adopted for reporting candidates' results, meaning that their performance is reported with reference to a set of standards.

Category B subjects are Applied Learning (ApL) subjects which consist of practical elements linked to broad professional and vocational fields. ApL courses are developed and delivered by the respective course providers (CPs) and are approved by the Education Bureau (EDB).

Category C subjects are foreign language subjects, including French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Spanish, and Urdu.
